EFCE FORUM
Recent geopolitical events have brought into sharp focus Europe’s vulnerability to disruptions in fossil fuel supply, partially overshadowing the equally urgent global need for deep and sustained decarbonisation. Nevertheless, the decarbonisation and circular economy agendas must remain at the forefront of scientific research and engineering practice.
While governmental pledges in many regions of the world have committed countries to ambitious climate and circularity targets, significant parts of the industrial sector continue to face major challenges in developing effective, reliable and economically sustainable strategies to achieve these goals. In this context, chemical engineering has a central role to play in enabling the transition towards net-zero CO₂ emissions and waste reduction in competitive process industries.
This EFCE Forum will focus on how innovation in chemical engineering can drive the decarbonisation and circularity of process industries, with particular emphasis on practical solutions, emerging technologies and industrial implementation. The session will open with an Early Career Plenary Lecture delivered by Dr Marina Micari (EPFL) entitled:
“Unlocking reliable pathways to industrial decarbonisation via clean separation technologies”
The plenary lecture will be followed by a roundtable discussion involving experts from industrial organisations. This interactive session will provide a platform for open dialogue between industry, academia and early-career researchers on effective decarbonisation and circularity strategies across a range of process industries. Participants will be encouraged to engage actively with the panel, exchange experiences, and share examples of good practice.
We warmly invite MECCE delegates to join this session to gain insight into current industrial approaches to decarbonisation, circularity and competitiveness, and to contribute to a forward-looking discussion on the future role of chemical engineering.
| 10:45 – 11:30 - Prof Jarka Glassey EFCE President will introduce the Early Career Plenary Lecturer, Dr Marina Micari Unlocking reliable pathways to industrial decarbonisation via clean separation technologies |
| 11:30 – 12:15- Round Table Discussion: Role of Chemical Engineering in advancing circularity, climate neutrality and competitiveness in the process industries. Prof. Jarka Glassey
Prof Jarka Glassey obtained her 1st class Ing biochemical engineering degree from the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava and her PhD in bioprocess modelling and optimisation from Newcastle University, UK. She is a Fellow of RAEng, IChemE and PFHEA. In January 2026 she took up the role of the President of the European Federation of Chemical Engineers (EFCE). She is actively involved in IChemE accreditation and other national programme accreditations and evaluations. She also chairs the RAEng Engineering X Skills for Safety Board and she was a member of the RAEng Engineers 2030 advisory panel identifying knowledge, skills and attributes of future engineers. Her research interests centre around the use of AI/ML and advanced modelling techniques for rapid (bio)process development, optimisation and sustainable operation. She is also very active in (bio)chemical engineering education, currently chairing the education section of the European Society for Biochemical Engineering Sciences (ESBES). Her main interests in this area include active learning methodologies including VR/ XR, student participation software and AI in effective delivery of engineering programmes and educator as well as engineering professional skill improvement.
