Renato Rota, Professor, Politécnico di Milano

Renato Rota is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano where he lectures Applied chemical kinetics, Applied physical chemistry, Chemical engineering thermodynamics, Materials and design of building elements, Safety and reliability in the process industries, Safety of chemical reactors and Thermodynamics of mixtures. He carries out his research activities in various fields, such as separation processes by adsorption, combustion and kinetics of chemical reactions, industrial safety and environmental pollution.
These research activities share the common approach of studying (through a preliminary experimental campaign and a subsequent mathematical modeling) the relevant chemical, physical, and biological phenomena by using the conceptual tools of thermodynamics, chemical kinetics and transport phenomena. The experimental activity mainly refers to the design, construction, development and use of pilot equipment on a laboratory scale. The ultimate goal is to obtain enough experimental data for the development and validation of mathematical models of simulation of the main phenomena involved. His scientific work is summarized in about 150 publications, mainly in international journals and books, in the fields of combustion, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, separation processes, industrial safety and pollution.

Richard Braatz, Edwin R. Gilliland Professor, MIT

Richard D. Braatz is the Edwin R. Gilliland Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he does research in process data analytics, design, and control of advanced manufacturing systems. He received an MS and PhD from the California Institute of Technology and was the Millennium Chair at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University before moving to MIT. He has consulted or collaborated with more than 20 companies including Dow, IBM, UTC, and Novartis. He is a Fellow of the AIChE, AAAS, and IEEE and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.
